Chief Medical Officer calls for fitness tests in schools

March 15th: Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson has called for fitness teststo be introduced to schools. In his last annual report before he steps down from the post, Donaldson suggested that routine bleep tests could help to address the declining levels of fitness in young people. Research shows that more than 60% of adults and a staggering 70% of children do not do the recommended daily amount of physical activity. Sir Liam said: "Inactivity pervades the country. It affects more people in England than the combined total of those who smoke, misuse alcohol or are obese. Being physically active is crucial to good health. If a medication existed that had a similar effect on preventing disease, it would be hailed as a miracle cure."
